Day of the Dead Family Festival at the Bowers Museum/Kidseum and yes it is FREE!

The Day of the Dead or Dia de los Muertes is an important celebration in Mexican culture. My parents came to the United States when they were very young, and el Dia de los Muertos, is a very special day in our family. Dia de los Muertos is a day of remembering your loved ones, who have passed away. I remember my mom making calabasa (sweet pumpkin), the day after Halloween, because it was one of my grandfather's favorite dishes. He had passed away when she was a young girl and would honor him by lighting candles for him and making his favorite dishes.

I want to keep the tradition alive with my children and plan on taking them to one of the best festivals in the area, The Day of the Dead Festival at the Bowers Museum.

I am always on the lookout for cultural events for my children, and this is one that we will most certainly be attending. The Day of the Dead Family Festival takes place on Sunday, November 1st from noon until 4pm. You can revel in one of Mexico's oldest traditions by honoring the spirits of our loved ones. Dia de los muertos is a celebration of life through music, dance, food and art.

The festival which is held in the Bowers' courtyard, will feature art projects, face painting, Mariachi Kids, folclorico dancers, Aztec dancers, and free admission to the Kidseum. If you have yet to visit the Kidseum, this would be the perfect day to attend. Your kiddos can make day of the dead puppets and masks.

Day of the Dead festival is a great family festival and one that you are sure to enjoy. It is a fantastic cultural experience for the entire family. The best part is that the festival and admission to both the Bowers and Kidseum are free of charge. Enjoy!

We had the opportunity to visit Muzeo in Anaheim last week and were able to tour their current exhibit, Treasures of Napoleon. My daughter and I had a great time taking in this amazing exhibit. Disneyland Passes. Which one is right for you?

I was chatting with a good friend yesterday about annual passes. He is looking to buy passes for his family and was asking for my opinion. Which pass should I get? I say it depends on your financial situation, how often are you planning on heading to the parks and location. I have had the Premium Pass for over a decade. It works for my family for a number of reasons. We live about a 20 minute drive from the park, we have quite a few family members that live outside the area and like to come down to Disneyland during the holidays, we are big Disney Geeks, we hate crowds and we love the freedom it provides of visiting any day of the year without restrictions. Here is the scoop on the Premium Annual Passport:
  • 365 consecutive days of admission to both theme parks.
  • 10% merchandise discount at select locations throughout the Disneyland® Resort
  • Exclusive benefits at select Downtown Disney® District locations
  • Free annual parking pass for the Mickey & Friends parking structure. ($79 value)
  • 10-15% dining discount at select Disneyland® Resort restaurants
  • Special rates at Disneyland Resort Hotels

The Premium Passes are very expensive. The pass is $429, however you can use the payment plan option, guests will pay for the cost of a 1-Day, 1-Park ticket - $72-upon purchase and will pay the remaining amount over the next 12 months, with no finance charges applied.

If you don't want to splurge on the Premium, then I highly recommend the Deluxe Annual Passport. Most of my friends and family have this pass.

Here is the scoop on the Deluxe Annual Passport:

  • 315 days of admission. Most Holidays and some peak season Saturdays are blocked out.
  • 10% dining discount at select Disneyland Resort Restaurants
  • Special Rates at Disneyland Resort Hotels
  • Parking is NOT included- $79 for parking.

The Deluxe Annual Passport is a little pricey at $289 . However, it does offer many admission days and if you plan on using your pass frequently, it could be your best option. As with the Premium Pass, you can use the payment plan option and you will pay for the cost of a 1-Day, 1-Park ticket -$72-upon purchase and will pay the remaining amount over the next 12 months, with no finance charges applied.

The other two options are more affordable options but have many blackout dates.

Here is the scoop on the Southern California Annual Passport:

  • 227 days of admission. Most of these days are off peak season. All Holidays and Saturdays are blocked out.
  • 10% dining discount at select Disneyland Resort Restaurants
  • Special Rates at the Disneyland Resort Hotels
  • Parking is not included -$79 for parking pass
  • This pass differs from the Southern California Select in that Sundays are allowed

The pass is $194, and as with the other passes you can use the payment plan option. You will pay for the cost of a 1-Day, 1-Park ticket - $72-upon purchase and will pay the remaining amount over the next 12 months, with no finance charges applied.

The least expensive of the passes is the Southern California Select Annual Pass:

  • 176 days of admission. This is a weekday pass only! All Holidays, weekends and most peak times at the park are blocked off.
  • 10% Dining discount at select Disneyland Resort restaurants
  • Special Rates at the Disneyland Park Hotels
  • Parking Pass is not included

The pass is $144 and as with the other passes you can use the payment plan option. You will pay for the cost of a 1-Day, 1-Park ticket-$72- upon purchase and will pay the remaining amount over the next 12 months, with no finance charges applied.

My friend decided to purchase the Deluxe Annual Passport since he wants to bring his kiddos down on Saturdays. I want to hear from you. What pass do you have? Do you love it? Do you use it often?

Spooky Science: Skeletons- El Dia De Los Muertos at Discovery Science Center

Earlier this week I had the opportunity to take a sneak peek along with my son at the new exhibit, Skeletons-El Dia De los Muertos, at the Discovery Science Center. We had a great time exploring the new exhibit and I was extremely impressed with the exhibit's mixing of science, art and culture. The Spooky Science exhibit does a great job in introducing your kiddos to the colorful Mexican Celebration of El Dia De Los Muertos along with teaching your family about science and forensics. My little one had a good time pointing out the different colors and skeletons. I think older children would love to not only learn about Skeletons but also about the cultural celebration of El Dia De Los Muertos. The exhibit will run everyday through November 8th. Some of the hands on activities in the exhibit include solving a forensic science mystery, piecing together a skeleton, playing a larger than life Operation game, participating in fun science experiments and exploring a fun and spooky 3D Maze. Day of the Dead Crafts will be featured on the weekend along with special presentations on forensics. We had a great time and my son had a fantastic time playing throughout the rest of the museum. He LOVES the Discovery Science Center and calls it the Dino Museum. We always have a great time and there is always a tear or two shed when it is time to leave. I hope you can visit soon and check out Skeletons- El Dia De Los Muertos. You will love it! To learn more and purchase tickets head here.

Free Workshop for Parents on Estate Planning

DISNEY GIVEAWAY AT FREE WORKSHOP FOR PARENTS Click Here to register for one of Personal Family Lawyer, Peter Sahin’s two free workshops he is holding this Fall to educate parents on what you can do to make sure your children and spouse are protected if ever anything happened to you. They will take place at 10:00 am on Saturday October 24th and Saturday November 7th at Partyopolis in Lake Forest. The workshops are kid-friendly and one family will win the $100 Disney Dollar raffle prize, but space is limited to 10 for each event. One of the great benefits of working with Peter is his unique Priceless Conversation, where you are able to share stories like the one below with your children – so they don’t get lost over time! Below is a story he will be leaving behind for his own family… “…I’m an only child, and my father raised me as a single parent while living abroad most of my younger years. To say I grew up learning the concept of independence at an early age doesn’t properly paint the picture. When we first moved back to the States (I was 9), a lot was different for me. A permanent memory of mine was a road trip to Joshua Tree National Park we took together. My father left me for about 15 minutes alone with the car to pump gas while he got directions. I had never pumped gas before, but figured out how to open the tank from under the back license plate frame and get the pump gun in there. I soon become bored and found myself distracted by a war between some ants and a beetle I found on the ground. He finally came out and we proceeded to drive off. Before I could get my seatbelt on, I felt a sudden jarring impact as my forehead bumped into the glove box. I collected myself and heard what sounded like rain falling on the roof…and then I noticed the 50 foot geyser shooting up from where the pump used to be!!!! People were sprinting away from us, and one guy hurdled the gas pump housing that was dangling behind us, still attached to the hose connected to our car. The scene was something out of a 70’s action movie! Well, there is such a thing as giving a kid too much responsibility. But on plus side, that experience certainly taught me how to ask for help and to be sure I finish what I start.” Traditionally, estate planning has only been focused on passing on assets between generations. Although important, your money is only one small part of your overall “Family Wealth”. Preserving and passing on stories (or lessons, values, and beliefs) that are personal to your family can be just as valuable. Peter conducts recorded interviews for all his planning clients (on a yearly basis for member clients) so they can protect and preserve their whole family wealth, including both their assets and who they are and what’s important to them.

Our visit to the Planes of Fame Air Museum

Last Saturday afternoon I took my plane loving son(he asks me to drive him by the Nixon Library everyday so he can see the Presidential helicopter) to the Planes of Fame Air Museum in Chino. The museum is adjacent to the Chino Airport and a true hidden gem. The museum is dedicated to preserving WWII aircraft and artifacts. The Planes of Fame Air Museum is a "living history" museum, where the aircraft are not only preserved, they are also kept flying. My kids squealed in delight the moment we pulled into the parking lot. You are greeted by a B-17 Bomber, and as you can imagine my kids were jumping up and down because they were able to see a classic plane up close. There are 7 hangers filled with numerous aircraft. My son was in little boy heaven. My usually very busy soon was in awe and loved walking around just pointing and taking everything in. I think the highlight of the visit for him was being able to peek in and climb aboard the B-17 Bomber. The very friendly staff also gave him a poster of the plane that he absolutely loved. We also loved walking outside and being able to touch and look around the planes that are awaiting restoration. I can't even begin to describe how my son's eyes light up when he was able to run around and touch the planes that were outside the hangers waiting for restoration. He kept asking me to take pictures and loved running around. I have to admit that another highlight was just being around a small airport. The kids loved watching the small planes fly by and looking at the runway. We had a great time and I will be heading back in tow with my husband next time. On the first Saturday of every month, the museum holds a mini-airshow around a certain theme. Each mini-airshow starts with one or more talks or seminars given by people involved with the featured aircraft (such as combat pilots), followed by a flight demonstration of two or three aircraft related to that Saturday's theme. The next mini-airshow will be held on Saturday, November 7th, and the them will be "Dawn of the Jet Age". It is an incredible place and the volunteers that help run the museum are just as friendly as can be. I love visiting places that are staffed by volunteers. It's just a great feeling to know that the people there are passionate about their love for the aircraft and love sharing their knowledge with others. I hope you can make a visit with your plane enthusiasts soon! For additional info head here Planes of Fame Air Museum 7000 Merrill Ave. #17, Chino 91710 (there are two museums located at the Chino airport- make sure you head to the right one) Open everyday from 9am to 5pm Admission $11 Adults $4 Kids 5-11 Kids 5 and under are Free!

Disney Sunday : Mickey's Trick or Treat Party at Disney's California Adventure

We had a blast at Mickey's Trick or Treat Party at Disney's California Adventure last Friday night. This annual, special ticketed event happens throughout October on the following nights: 8, 9, 15, 16, 21, 22, 23, 28, 29, 30 and 31. This unique party lets adults and children alike dress up and trick-or-treat inside DCA. The kids loved getting to pick up candy at 25 Treat Stops located throughout the park. There was some terrific candy, including Ghirardelli chocolate! There was also healthy treats like apple slices and Craisins to be had. My daughter was fond of the princess photo locations, while my son seemed to favor the Disney villains. The kids rocked out at Candy Corn Acres just inside the Sun Plaza, where they were able to dance to all the top 40 hits. The Pacific Wharf area became Pirate’s Wharf, which featured a photo location, craft area and games. The Hollywood Pictures Backlot also had dancing and characters to meet. All the favorite rides and attractions were also open for the event which ran from 6:30 PM to 10:30 PM.
