Galapagos Tortoise Exhibit at the San Diego Zoo

Today's post about the San Diego Zoo's new Tortoise Exhibit, comes from the very talented Caryn, who blogs at Rockinmama.net

When my son was about a year and a half, we visited the San Diego Zoo with him for the first time. We only covered about half of the zoo at the time because it's huge! At 100 acres, it's one of the largest zoos in the world and home to 4,000 rare and endangered animals which represent more than 800 species and subspecies.

Last week, we had the privilege of attending the grand re-opening of the Fetter Family Galapagos Tortoise Exhibit. Apart from the Ecuadorian Islands, the Zoo has one of the largest colonies of Galapagos tortoises in the world. And now, they have a brand new living space, thanks to San Diego Trustee Emeritus Tom Fetter, and 1,700 donors. You may not know that the zoo has been home to 17 Galapagos tortoises since 1928, which means many of them are over 100 years old.

With a bigger living space, enhanced landscaping, three new pools and state of the art amenities, these tortoises will be living the next several years of their life in luxury. Located in Reptile Mesa, visitors can pet and feed the tortoises at certain times of the day.

While we were visiting, we learned a few fun facts about tortoises:
They can live to be 100 years or more, with the oldest living to be 171 years old.
Their favorite foods include flowers, leaves, grass, and carrots
They can go without eating or drinking for up to a year. You know those shells? They actually serve a purpose and can store food and water.

The San Diego Zoo is dedicated to the conservation of endangered species and their habitats and participates in research and education around the globe.

For more information, just visit their website.

No compensation was received for this post. I was invited to attend a media preview at the zoo.

What I learned from Stonyfield and giveaway!

Im trying to make some healthy changes in our family. I'm slowly integrating organic products and trying to change our eating habits. Last week Stonyfield invited bloggers to a special evening out to learn about healthy eating and the amazing benefits of yogurt.

I love yogurt and have recently become hooked on Greek Yogurt. It is creamier, more satisfying and in my opinion it is much tastier than regular yogurt. We learned about the benefits of yogurt and in particular the benefits of Oikos Organic Greek Yogurt. We were also able to try some amazing entrees, appetizers and even some delish dessert and  all were  made with Greek Yogurt. I learned that we can easily substitute Greek Yogurt for mayonnaise, sour cream and so much more. The dishes were out of this world and so tasty! I'm making chicken salad tomorrow and plan on using Oikos Greek Yogurt instead of mayonaise.

I also learned that there are only a few true Greek Yogurts on the market. There are plenty of Greek Style or Greek Inspired Yogurts but one a few are true Greek Yogurt.  Do you know how to tell if it is authentic Greek Yogurt? Grab a spoonful and hold it upside down. If it stays and doesn't move, it is authentic.  Stonyfield's Oikos Greek Yogurt is 100% authentic and certified organic.

Ready to try out some Stonyfield Greek Yogurt? Enter to win a goodie bag from Stonyfield. All you have to do is leave a comment and you will be entered to win a gift bag. Contest ends on Sun, October 3rd at 11:59pm. Winner will be selected at random. Good Luck!

Peter Pan at the Orange County Performing Arts Center

We are big fans of theater in our home. My daughter has now watched a couple of shows and my son has watched two. I can't tell you how excited I am that Peter Pan, a threesixty production, is coming to the Orange County Performing Arts Center, in just a couple of days. Not only are we theater lovers in our home, we are huge Peter Pan fans and I am literally counting down the days until we can attend as a family.

The new threesixty° stage production of PETER PAN, J M Barrie’s classic story will be performed in a state-of-the-art theater pavilion at the Orange County Performing Arts Center for a limited engagement starting Tuesday, September 28, 2010, with the opening night set for Sunday, October 3, 2010.

One of the most striking elements of this new production is the setting in which it is presented. The threesixty° Theatre, allows for performance “in the round” in a 1,300 seat theater-tent, which will stand beside the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. The entire interior of the tent is lit with more than 15,000 square feet of Hi-Resolution video – three times the size of Imax screens – so that both cast and audience are immersed in a CGI Neverland. When Peter and Wendy fly to Neverland, the audience flies with them over 400 square miles of virtual London and beyond.

I don't splurge for many things, however, theater tickets and cultural events always have room in our budget. This is one event you do not want to miss! Tickets are on sale now at the Orange County Performing Arts Center's box office or by heading here

The show will run from Sept 28th-Nov 21st.

Modern Family the complete First Season Review and Giveaway

I love Modern Family. When I was offered the opportunity to review and do a giveaway, I could not pass it up! This show is funny and it is the one show I look forward to watch during the week. This giveaway is for the grown ups!

Featuring an all-star cast led by Ed O’Neill, Sofia Vargara, Julie Bowen, and Ty Burrell, Modern Family takes a refreshing and funny view of what it means to raise a family in this hectic day and age.  Multi-cultural relationships, adoption, and same-sex marriage are just a few of the timely issues faced by the show’s three wildly-diverse broods.  No matter the size or shape, family always comes first in this hilariously “modern” look at life, love, and laughter.

The complete first season of Modern Family is coming to DVD on September 21st.

It's giveaway time! I have two copies of Modern Family to giveaway. All you have to do is leave a comment letting me know who your favorite character is and you are entered to win.

Minivan Envy: The 2011 Honda Odyssey

When Honda invited me a few weeks ago to the preview of the 2011 Honda Odyssey in beautiful La Jolla, I pretty much jumped at the opportunity. You see, I have minivan envy. I drive a very nice SUV, but truth be told, it is not a very practical vehicle when you have two little ones. In all honesty, I wish I drove a minivan. There I said it. After test driving the Odyssey I really wish my SUV would magically transform itself into the 2011 Honda Odyssey.  It is a great  family vehicle and  has features that any mom will love. Let me tell you why.

Not only is the new redesigned 2011 Honda Odyssey a great family vehicle, it also handles like a dream. I was able to take it on a drive through various driving conditions and terrains, including a  bit of mountain driving and it handled so well. The Odyssey hugged the curves and it made me feel safe. Not only did it make feel safe, the Odyssey is safe. The Odyssey is equipped with side curtain airbags and dual chamber, front-side airbags, and Vehicle Stability Assist and Anti- Lock Braking system with Brake Assist.

There are so many reasons why I really feel this is the great family vehicle (a.k.a. kiddo friendly). One of my favorites is that it fits 8 people comfortably. You can also fit 3 car seats in a row. I love that! We are thinking about adding to our family next year and this is something that is important to me. I want to be able to fit 3 car seats in one row and not have to struggle. Not only can it fit 3 car seats in a row, it can fit 3 adults in a row. The Odyssey 2nd row seating is able to move 2 inches to the side when needed, like when you have 3 of your girlfriends heading out for girls night out.

The Odyssey also has those little details that will make any mom's life easier. There are 15 cup holders that can hold  44 oz drinks, various snack holders that fit snack boxes of various shapes, a storage area for your purse, grocery bag hooks in the bag so that your groceries won't roll while driving and my absolute favorite, a cool box in the instrument panel center rack that cools either six- 12 oz  cans or four-20 oz bottles.

One of the many reasons why I want this vehicle, is because it will allow my kiddos to be entertained. We are always on the go on outings and spent plenty of time in the car. The Honda Odyssey is equipped to entertain the kids. One of my favorite features is that it has an actual electric outlet in the third row. You can plug in a DVD player, laptop, charge a phone or a gaming system. The possibilities are endless! It is also is equipped with an a/v jack to be able to plug in your favorite gaming system.  It also comes with a DVD entertainment system with a split screen monitor that allows two movies or programs to be played at the same time. My kiddos are always disagreeing on what to watch and this would definitely help  solve that problem!

Here are some additional features of the 2011 Honda Odyssey

Safety Features
  • Brake Override and ABS
  • Occupant protection zone includes- 6 airbags
  • Active Head Restraints
  • Sensor Protectors- Back up Sensors- very important with the little ones
  • 5 Latch Locations
  • Vehicle Stability Assist
  • Rear View Camera
Comfort and those little extras that make our life a little easier
  • Fits 3 car seats comfortably
  • 15 cup holders
  • cool box storage
  • Ultrawide screen/split screen
  • More seating width
  • Aux jack in 3rd row
  • Ready for gaming

Overall I can  say that I would highly recommend this vehicle to family and friends that are searching for a great vehicle that would suit a young or growing family. It has a sleek design, it is roomy, safe and drives like a sedan. If you don't believe me, take it out for a spin yourself and you will not be disappointed. The 2011 Honda Odyssey will be hitting a show room near you on September 30th. To learn more about the Odyssey head here.
