Los Angeles Live Steamers Railroad Museum

Orange County isn't the only home to free train rides on the weekends. The Los Angeles Live Steamers Railroad Museum offers fun and free train rides to the public.  It's located in Griffith Park and is a must if you have little railroad enthusiasts. There are train exhibits that everyone will enjoy and every Sunday the museum operates 7½" gauge model trains for the general public free of charge from 11 am - 3 pm (weather permitting). except for the Sunday before Memorial Day and the first Sunday in October. The gate is open from 10:45 am to 3 pm. Train rides begin at 11 am. The museum is home to Walt Disney's Barn. It's the actual barn that was in Mr. Disney's backyard in Holmby Hills, California. The barn is where Walt , who was a member of the Los Angeles Live Steamers Railroad Museum had his workshop and ran the switches for his home railroad. The barn is open on the third Sunday of each month and features displays of Disney, LALS and railroad related memorabilia. Guided tours are provided by members of the Carolwood Pacific Historical Society. Discovery Science Center's Science of Gingerbread Competition- Fun for the Family and Free to enter!

I have to share with you something super fun that I plan to enter with my family. The Discovery Science Center is hosting their annual Science of Gingerbread Competition.  The Discovery Science Center is seeking out creativity from children, adults, businesses, and organizations. All participants will be invited to an exclusive Gingerbread party on Dec 2 to kick off the festivities. You also have the opportunity to display your creation at the DSC for 6 weeks! You also could win cash prizes. I  think it would be fun for the kiddos or a  family to create something and enter it.

Free Family Art Days at the Claremont Museum of Art

I love sharing Free, Fun and Family Geared Events or places to visit. The Claremont Museum of Art hosts Family Art Days. Designed to inspire creativity and encourage families to make art together. These casual, "walk-up and make art" events feature new activities each month, inspired by upcoming holidays or the Museum's current exhibits. This is a great way for families to spend creative time together. The museum provides the materials and volunteers. The museum offers Free Admission on Family Days. The next Family Art Day will be Sunday, October 18th from noon to 3pm. It's a fun event that is definitely worth checking out! For additional information head here.

Sea Scare and Sea Fair at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium- Fun and FREE Events

I know it's only Tuesday but I wanted to share with you two very fun events happening at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium in San Pedro on Sunday, October 18th and Saturday, October 24th. Sea Fair is happening on Sunday October 18th from 10am to 4:30pm. Sea Fair offers ocean-related activities for every age, which include; face-painting, an exciting marine life puppet show, and a giant origami demonstration. Adventurous pirates of all ages can join in the search for buried treasure in the “Great Treasure Hunt.” Stop by and chat with more than two dozen marine-related organizations that will be present to share their information and activities with your family. Sea Scare is happening on Saturday, October 24 from 6pm to 9pm. Have your kiddos come in costume for trick-or-treating throughout the aquarium at six different themed treat stations, or walk along the docks of the “Port Town” scare zone. This is an incredibly fun event and the best part is that it's FREE. All you have to do is pay for parking! Parking is $1 an hour- bring a few dollars and enjoy the aquarium. Lowe's Build and Grow Clinic

Happy Friday! There are many fun events going on this weekend. One that happens twice a month is the Lowe's Build and Grow Clinic. The FREE workshops at your local Lowe's Home Improvement Stores, gives children the opportunity to build a wooden project. Each participant also receives a free apron, goggles, a project themed patch and a merit certification upon completion of the project.

All you have to do is head here, select a clinic and how many will attend, enter your zip to select the store closest to you and then enter your email address and the name of your child. Easy as pie!

The clinic will take place on Saturday, October 10th from 10am-11am.

Free Fun Event- Orange County Children's Book Festival

I love Fun, Free and Educational Events. I wanted to share one with you that is not to be missed! The Orange County Children's Book Festival is on Sunday October 4th from 9:30 am to 4:30pm at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa. There really is something for children of all ages to experience at the Orange County Children’s Book Festival. Everyone will be able to enjoy the multiple stages with author and illustrator presentations and of course professional storytellers. From the OC Family Main Entertainment stage you can relax and enjoy family friendly entertainment and hear celebrity authors share “inside scoop” about their latest books. There will be absolutely something for everyone!

There will be trackless train ride around the OCC campus for kids and parents and a children's craft corner where kids make their own book markers, visors and other “make it take it” keepsake items. There will also be face painting, crazy hair styling, petting zoo, musicians, dancers, balloons, readings, drawings and so much more.

Port of Long Beach Green Port Fest and it's FREE!

Have you heard of the Port of Long Beach Green Port Fest? If you haven't, here is the scoop. Green Port Fest is the Port of Long Beach's annual open house. It's a chance to educate the community about the port's vital role in the economy and ground-breaking environmental programs. There will be more than 70 booths and exhibits, children’s activities, entertainment, food, boat and rail tours and much more. The best part is that the Fest is FREE!

Some of the activities featured at the festival will be a children's playground with face painting, eyes under the sea - spotlighting underwater robots, big machines-checking out the yard hostlers that move the heavy containers under the sea and what lives in the harbor spotlighting the wildlife that calls the Port of Long Beach home.

When I first read about the Festival last year, I couldn't wait to share this with you. The Long Beach Green Port Fest will be held on Saturday, October 3rd from 1oAM to 3PM. Green Port Fest is held at the Port Administration Building, but there is no on-site parking. Instead, park at the Long Beach Convention Center and hop on one of the free shuttles.

Make sure to arrive there early to reserve a spot on one of the many boat tours. It's going to be so fun!

Shark Lagoon Nights are back & FREE at the Aquarium of the Pacific!

If you are looking for something to do with your family that is FREE and absolutely fun, look no further! The Aquarium of the Pacific is hosting Shark Lagoon Nights, every Friday night, from 6pm to 9pm.

The public is invited to get up close with the ocean’s ultimate predators at the Aquarium of the Pacific for FREE during Shark Lagoon Nights. Guests will have the opportunity to touch bamboo sharks and see large sharks such as sandtigers as well as rays in the Aquarium’s Shark Lagoon. There will also be live entertainment and fun for the entire family.

California Science Center- revisited and yes it's free!

If you grew up in Southern California, you might recall the commercials for the Museum of Science and Industry. I have fond memories of visiting with my family as a child. Well time has been very kind to the museum and it's now called the California Science Center. I've been meaning to visit with the kids for quite some time now and was finally able to make the trip this weekend. We packed a bag Saturday afternoon and headed off for a visit to the Science Center. The Science is Center is located in Exposition Park and is the West Coast's largest hands on science center. It boasts 3 floors, which holds 4 permanent exhibits and a special exhibit gallery which showcases popular exhibits from museums around the world. The four permanent exhibits are The Creative World Exhibit, The World of Life Exhibit, Air and Space Exhibit and the Science court. The first exhibit we toured was The Creative World , which showcases advances humans have made in communication, architecture and transportation. My kids loved the exhibit. My daughter was fascinated with the communication section of the exhibit. The second and final exhibit we toured was the World of Life exhibit. My kids were in heaven. They did not want to budge from the gallery. They loved the the Life Source gallery which featured a chicken hatchery. The absolute highlight of the trip for them was a visit to the Discovery Room. If you have kids under 5 this is probably where you will spend most of your time. Your children will be able to see frogs, spiders, crabs, turtles, birds and snakes close up. There is a fantastic toddler area. My son Michael who is only a year old was entertained for at least an hour. We had planned to visit the Air and Space Exhibit but we ran out of time. If you are planning a visit make sure you allow for plenty of time. I can't tell you enough how much we all loved the museum. I would arrive early to make the best of your visit. I would visit the second floor first and explore The Creative World Exhibit and The World of Life exhibit. I would then stop to have lunch at either McDonald's or Taco Bell Express, which are located on the first floor of the museum. After lunch I would head out to explore the third floor and the Air and Space Wing. We will be heading out to explore the Air and Space exhibit next weekend and I can't wait to share our experience with you. Trust me your family will love this place. UCI Observatory

Did you know that UCI has it's own observatory? The Observatory at the University of California, Irvine, is located in the fields on the outskirts of campus. The observatory has a large computer-controlled telescope and numerous other smaller, portable, telescopes. The observatory hosts Visitor Nights, which are free and open to the general public, approximately 5 times per year. The next visitors night will be held on Saturday August 22nd from 8-10pm. You can use their telescopes to see Saturn, the Ring Nebula, open and globular star clusters. You can also listen to a lecture entitled "Star Clusters in the Milky Way" by Carol Thornton. The Observatory is located on the UCI campus. Visitors should park in the ICS/Engineering Parking Structure at the corner of E. Peltason and Anteater Drives for a $7 fee. Free shuttle buses will transport you between the Parking Structure and the gravel road to the Observatory. Shuttles will depart every 10 minutes starting a half hour before and ending a half hour after the event. Only in the unlikely event of rain will Visitor Night be canceled, and a notice will be posted on their website by 3 pm that day. Free Crafts Every Saturday at Lakeshore Learning Stores

I just found about this and had to share- Did you know that all Lakeshore Learning Stores offer free crafts EVERY SATURDAY afternoon from 11am to 3pm? I didn't know but I can't wait to head there and take the kiddos. Every Saturday from 11am to 3pm you and the kiddos can drop in anytime and take part in arts and craft classes. All supplies are provided, and a staff member guides kids through a different project every week. The best part is that of course it's free and geared towards kiddos aged 3 and up. Summer Courtyard Kids Festival

I know it's only Tuesday but before you know it the weekend will be here and you won't want to miss taking your kiddos to the Summer Courtyard Kids Festival at The Japanese American Museum in Little Tokyo. The Summer Courtyard Kids Festival will feature whimsical arts and crafts, a toddler area, a carnival, origami, live entertainment, face painting and so much more. Free Movie Mondays under the stars at the Orange County Performing Art Center

I keep stumbling upon so many free fun things to do this summer that I'm going to have to post at least twice a day. I received an email from the Orange County Performing Art Center and had to share about their Free for all under the stars Movie Mondays. Movies start at dusk(approximately 8pm) and guests are invited to bring beach chairs and picnic dinners/snacks. You can start staking your spot around 5:30pm. The dates/movies are as follows- July 13th- Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory July 20th- Annie July 27th- Footloose August 3rd Momma Mia I have already saved the dates and plan on picnicking with the family. Kids Bowl Free

Looking for something to keep the kiddos busy this summer? Here is another fabulous freebie for the kiddos this summer- The Kids Bowl Free Summer Program allows your kids to bowl two free games every day Monday-Thursday all summer long. There are only two locations in Southern California that are participating- Concourse Bowling in Anaheim and Gage Bowl in Huntington Park. The only thing you will have to do is provide bowling shoes or rent some which go for $3.00 at the Anaheim Concourse. I was discussing this with a couple of friends this week and they suggested buying some bowling shoes on ebay- they go for around $20.00. Here is how it works -

1. Head over to kidsbowlfree.com-
2. Select a bowling center near you.
3. Register directly on the bowling center page (The registration is valid only at the bowling center where you register and cannot be used at any other bowling center unless otherwise noted.)
4. Once you register, you will have the opportunity to purchase the family pass. You don't have to but it is a really good deal!!The Family Pass was created to allow for adult family members to enjoy bowling throughout the summer as well. The Family Pass starts from $23.95 and includes 2 games per person per day. The Family Pass covers up to 4 adult family members. You may have 1, 2, 3, or 4 adults on the family pass. The one-time payment covers up to 4 adults for the entire summer.After your registration we will send you two (2) emails.The first email is a welcome email and contains your account information.
5. The second email is very important. Bureau of Sanitation Open House

This might not be your typical outing but I just had to share because I think my son would be all over this. He absolutely goes bonkers on Trash Days. He will usually run to our side gate and oohh and ahh as the garbage truck rolls by. The West Los Angeles District Yard will be hosting an open house where sanitation truck operators will give demos and tours. Your kiddos will also be able to learn all about garbage trucks and recycling. Food and drinks will be offered free of charge as well as trees to take home, Free mulch, Games, Prizes and much more. It's something different and unique and of course Free!! We have a busy day planned out this Saturday or we would definitely be heading to this. Have fun!! You can find more about it here

Legoland for an hour and yes for free!!

I am always on the lookout for free/good deals to do with the kids. Kelly and Coleen over at the fabulous website Just-Spotted had a tip last week about Legoland being free along with parking during the last hour of admission. We wanted to go for a drive last Saturday and decided to head over to Legoland for the last hour.

We cruised right up and scored premier parking for free- yes free(it was just about 10 steps from the entrance) and then headed over to enjoy the park for a bit. We did a couple of rides and the kids had so much fun. We topped of our evening with a drive on PCH through Carlsbad and Oceanside and a bite to eat by the beach. It was so much fun and although it was only an hour the kids had a blast. By the way- when you enter the park most people will be exiting and the turn cues will be turned to exiting and not entering- enter in through the stroller entrances.

The only drawback about visiting Legoland is that you will want to buy an annual pass because that place is so much fun for the little ones and they will want to go back.

Free Weekend Tidepool Walk at The Cabrillo Aquarium

If you are an early bird(and let's face it- if you have kids- you've been forced into it) and your kiddos love sea life - check out the Cabrillo Aquarium's tidepool walk this weekend. There will be another one on Saturday June 27th. The walks are from 7-8:30 and will be led by a naturalist who will guide you on a quest to observe and learn about marine animals in their natural habitat.
