Smithsonian Magazine: Free Museum Admission Day- Sept 25th

I love almost anything that is free. As I was researching a future post, I stumbled upon Museum Day 2010, which will take place on Saturday, September 25th. Museum Day 2010 is sponsored by The Smithsonian Magazine


Museum Day 2010 will offer you and a guest(all you have to do is head to this link and print out a free card) FREE general admission to hundreds of museums and cultural venues nationwide. California has over 90 participating museums! This is the perfect opportunity to make that visit to a particpating museum that you have been wanting to visit. No excuses!

All you have to do is head here and print out your Free card. It allows you and a guest admission to participating museums. Simple as that!

Pretend City- Good To Go From Head to Toe and How you can get in for free!

My family loves Pretend City. We have a membership and try to head there at least once a week. One of the things that I love about Pretend City is their focus on children and their Good To Good from Head to Toe Initiative.

 Good To Go From Head To Toe is an initiative designed to educate the community and parents about the importance of having children (birth through 5-years-old) receive regular developmental check-ups as part of their routine, well-child visits.

As part of their Good To Go from Head to Toe Initiative, Pretend City holds monthly Way to Play days on the second Friday of each month to  learn more about child growth and development while interacting with your child in a variety of fun activities.

Each Way to Play day will highlight a particular developmental skill, like communication, and offer community specialists on-site for support. Way to Play day activities and special giveaways are included the the price of museum admission.  If you print the coupon/flier below you will be able to do receive Two for one admission on Way to Play days.

On March 13th Pretend City will be hosting a FREE  Good To Go From Head to Toe Wellness Fair from 10 am to 4pm. You will learn all about your child's development and there will be free language, health, dental, hearing and speech screenings for the kiddos. The best part is if your kiddos participate in the activities and screenings they will receive FREE admission to the museum that day. It's a fantastic event and how can you beat Free?

Free Admission at LACMA on Martin Luther King Day

I'm all about doing free things. I'm sure you all are too!! If you are looking for something to do on Monday to celebrate Dr. King's birthday ,why not try a visit to the LACMA(Los Angeles County Museum of Art).

 Thanks to a generous contribution from Target, visitors of all ages are invited to a free day at the museum featuring live performances, tours, and self-guided activities. The museum will be having special performances and family friendly activities. Make sure to check out the children's special audio tour designed specifically with your little ones in mind. I hope you can enjoy a day at the museum and remember that free admission at the LACMA will be held every holiday Monday. There will be activities from 12:30 to 3:30.

Free Family Art Days at the Claremont Museum of Art

I love sharing Free, Fun and Family Geared Events or places to visit. The Claremont Museum of Art hosts Family Art Days. Designed to inspire creativity and encourage families to make art together. These casual, "walk-up and make art" events feature new activities each month, inspired by upcoming holidays or the Museum's current exhibits. This is a great way for families to spend creative time together. The museum provides the materials and volunteers. The museum offers Free Admission on Family Days. The next Family Art Day will be Sunday, October 18th from noon to 3pm. It's a fun event that is definitely worth checking out! For additional information head here.

Shark Lagoon Nights are back & FREE at the Aquarium of the Pacific!

If you are looking for something to do with your family that is FREE and absolutely fun, look no further! The Aquarium of the Pacific is hosting Shark Lagoon Nights, every Friday night, from 6pm to 9pm.

The public is invited to get up close with the ocean’s ultimate predators at the Aquarium of the Pacific for FREE during Shark Lagoon Nights. Guests will have the opportunity to touch bamboo sharks and see large sharks such as sandtigers as well as rays in the Aquarium’s Shark Lagoon. There will also be live entertainment and fun for the entire family.

The Los Angeles Museum of Holocaust will offer Free admission on Sunday September 27th , since the museum is closed on Saturday.

California Science Center- revisited and yes it's free!

If you grew up in Southern California, you might recall the commercials for the Museum of Science and Industry. I have fond memories of visiting with my family as a child. Well time has been very kind to the museum and it's now called the California Science Center. I've been meaning to visit with the kids for quite some time now and was finally able to make the trip this weekend. We packed a bag Saturday afternoon and headed off for a visit to the Science Center. The Science is Center is located in Exposition Park and is the West Coast's largest hands on science center. It boasts 3 floors, which holds 4 permanent exhibits and a special exhibit gallery which showcases popular exhibits from museums around the world. The four permanent exhibits are The Creative World Exhibit, The World of Life Exhibit, Air and Space Exhibit and the Science court. The first exhibit we toured was The Creative World , which showcases advances humans have made in communication, architecture and transportation. My kids loved the exhibit. My daughter was fascinated with the communication section of the exhibit. The second and final exhibit we toured was the World of Life exhibit. My kids were in heaven. They did not want to budge from the gallery. They loved the the Life Source gallery which featured a chicken hatchery. The absolute highlight of the trip for them was a visit to the Discovery Room. If you have kids under 5 this is probably where you will spend most of your time. Your children will be able to see frogs, spiders, crabs, turtles, birds and snakes close up. There is a fantastic toddler area. My son Michael who is only a year old was entertained for at least an hour. We had planned to visit the Air and Space Exhibit but we ran out of time. If you are planning a visit make sure you allow for plenty of time. I can't tell you enough how much we all loved the museum. I would arrive early to make the best of your visit. I would visit the second floor first and explore The Creative World Exhibit and The World of Life exhibit. I would then stop to have lunch at either McDonald's or Taco Bell Express, which are located on the first floor of the museum. After lunch I would head out to explore the third floor and the Air and Space Wing. We will be heading out to explore the Air and Space exhibit next weekend and I can't wait to share our experience with you. Trust me your family will love this place. Free Admission to the Raymond M Alf - Museum of Paleontology

Do you have a little dino lover in your family? We have two dino lovers in our home and I can't wait to take them to Raymond M Alf Museum of Paleontology in Claremont. I am going to try to take a trip down to check it out today or next Wednesday. I thought I would give you the heads up on this great little place. I also wanted to pass on that admission is free every Wednesdays. Orange Empire Railway Museum

I had the opportunity this past Saturday to take my family to the Orange Empire Railway Museum in Perris. Words can't begin to describe what an amazing place this is for kids and adults alike. It's an incredible place that will not soon be forgotten by our family. In fact my husband and I are going to plan a date around it just to go out and explore the grounds. The Orange Empire Railway museum is 88 acres and quite extensive- so make sure to bring great walking shoes, sunscreen, hats, water and if you have the really teeny tots a good sturdy stroller.The Museum grounds are quite large and contain numerous buildings, parks and outdoor areas to explore. The grounds are quite large and there's a lot to see! Our kids just loved running in the open space (although we were a little paranoid with the trains running around). You will have exhausted kids from exploring all day. The museum is home to the West's largest collection of railway locomotives, passenger and freight cars, streetcars, interurban electric cars, buildings and other artifacts dating from the 1870's (they even have old Disneyland ticket booths there!!) Your little trains enthusiasts will have the opportunity to learn all about locomotives, steam engine and my absolute favorite (I'm a Los Angeles history buff) - the old Pacific Electric red cars and Los Angeles Railway yellow cars. We were able to walk around the hangers and see the trains that are in the middle of restorations by the dedicated volunteers. We were also able to explore different railway cars and locomotives which the kids went bonkers over. They loved shouting all aboard and manning the controls. My son was in train heaven!! There was so much to explore and although we spent 3 hours there it really was not enough time. While admission and parking for the Museum is free, a ticket must be purchased to ride on the Museum Railway. The ticket is good for the entire day, for as many trips as you wish. Your fare goes directly towards meeting Museum operating expenses. On regular weekends, an all-day pass to ride the trains costs $12 for adults, $8 for children 5-11, free for kids under 5. We could not resist and opted to purchase a day pass and boy was it worth it. We rode two pacific electric cars, two southern pacific trains and a trolley all for about the price of a movie. It was an amazing experience and the kiddos of course were thrilled. I would say that this most definitely is an outing that would take a couple of hours. There is a park/picnic area where you can enjoy lunch under the shade. Pack drinks and a picnic and you will be set!! There is also a snack shop with food that not only was tasty but quite reasonable. I would also make sure to pack a camera because this is a photography heaven! The museum is open everyday- however most of the exhibits and the railway are closed weekdays. The best day to visit is on the weekends from 9 am to 5pm- although the railway runs from 11am to 5pm Saturday and Sunday. The museums is located at 2201 South "A" street Perris, 92570 We had no problems with our directions from mapquest and our navigation system. It led us right to the entrance. I'm always on the lookout for Free Museum Days around town and the NexGen program at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)is one that can't be missed. NexGen is a free membership to the LACMA to anyone 17 and under. The NexGen LACMA offers free general admission to the member as well as one accompanying adult. This includes permanent collection galleries and selected special exhibitions. To join, visit the LACMA box office or visit the LACMA website and print out the enrollment offer and send it in. Imagine You're a Monster at Muzeo in Anaheim

A couple of weeks ago I received a tip from a reader about a great event happening May 16th. Muzeo is a great little museum in Anaheim that is currently having a fantastic exhibition -MONSTERS AND BEASTS: HAIRY, SCARY AND UNLEASHED featuring two exhibits in one – Bizarre Beast, Past & Present and How to Make a Monster: The Art & Technology of Animatronics. They are holding a Kids Free Day on May 16th with programs specifically designed for the little monster lovers. All little “monsters” are invited to a “Muffins with Monsters” breakfast from 10:00a.m. - 12 Noon, then are free to explore the MUZEO’s “Double-Header” exhibition - MONSTERS AND BEASTS: HAIRY, SCARY AND UNLEASHED featuring two exhibits in one – Bizarre Beast, Past & Present and How to Make a Monster: The Art & Technology of Animatronics. “Imagine You’re a Monster” Kids Free Day at the MUZEO will also include monster-themed games, prizes, scary face painting and a specially installed rock-climbing wall. Shark Lagoon Nights- Free @ The Aquarium of the Pacific

I love free events. Come to think of it- everyone does!! I'm going to write about a Free event that you will not want to miss!!

I've posted about Shark Lagoon Nights before but due to popular request(my friend Amy) and since it's been almost a year since I posted - I wanted to post about it again.

Shark Lagoon Nights are held every Friday night at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach. It's a free event open to the public. Shark Lagoon night gives your kiddos an opportunity to see sharks up close and personal. You will have the opportunity to touch bamboo sharks and see large sharks such as sand tigers as well as rays in the Aquarium's Shark Lagoon. It's held every Friday from 6-9pm. It's a seriously cool experience and of course absolutely free.

Kidspace Children's Museum- Free Admission on Family Night

The Kidspace Children's Museum in Pasadena is a must visit for your family. Kidspace is located in Pasadena and is home to some pretty cool hands on exhibits. There is something for every child in your family- from a 4 year old and under area designed for the tiny ones to a dinosaur dig for the bigger kiddos.

The museum offers a Free Family Night the first Tuesday of the month from 4pm to 8pm. If you have not had the opportunity to visit this gem, make sure to mark your calendar for the next Free Family Night.

Free Admission - The Arboretum of Los Angeles County

The Arboretum of Los Angeles is a fantastic place to take the kiddos. The 127 acre botonical garden is a wonderland for the kiddos. You can hike with them, take them to one of the many classes that are offered or just stroll around and observe nature in all its splendor. The Arboretum offers free admission on the third Tuesday of the month. Plan accordingly this month and enjoy a wonderful day with the kiddos. The Los Angeles County Arboretum & Botanic Garden is located at 301 North Baldwin Avenue, Arcadia, CA, 91007.

Bowers Museum - Free Admission Friday Nights

I'm always looking for something fun , inexpensive and educational to do with the kids and this definitely hits the mark. The Bowers Museum in Santa Ana with a sponsorship from the PIMCO foundation will extend its evening hours and cover the cost of admission on Friday evenings during the exhibition, Terra Cotta Warriors: Guardians of China’s First Emperor. To make the museum more accessible, PIMCO’s Free Friday Nights offers free admission to the exhibition for up to 100 visitors per hour at 4, 5, 6, and 7 pm, and the museum will stay open until 8 pm. In addition to seeing the famed terra cotta warriors, visitors can roam around the museum, and explore other special exhibitions and collections on view in the galleries, see a film in the auditorium, or purchase specialty drinks and dinner at Tangata Restaurant. Terra Cotta Warriors: Guardians of China’s First Emperor runs through October 12th, 2008
